Dispatch: \u2018Good Luck To All!\u2019<\/a><\/h2>\nDonald Trump\u2019s slow-motion surrender in Ukraine<\/p>\n
It is not true that Donald Trump has been promising a health care plan\u2014and failing to deliver it\u2014since 2016. In fact, Trump has been promising a health care plan\u2014and failing to deliver it\u2014since 2011. \u201cNobody knew health care could be so complicated!\u201d he famously explained<\/a>. Some people knew, and by \u201csome people,\u201d I mean everybody but Trump. <\/p>\nNo one knew trade could be so complicated, either, I suppose\u2014that trade war that is \u201cgood, and easy to win<\/a>\u201d is not working out as planned. Or the deficit\u2014witness the fiasco DOGE turned out to be. Or bringing down prices<\/a>. Crime, immigration, entitlements\u2014all too complicated for this guy. <\/p>\nAnd then there\u2019s Ukraine. <\/p>\n
Back when Trump was just a Page Six grotesque and social climber, Spy<\/em> magazine famously described him as a \u201cshort-fingered vulgarian.\u201d It turns out that his fingers aren\u2019t the problem, but his short little attention span\u2014not his grip, but his grip on the issues and, from time to time, on reality<\/em>. <\/p>\nTrump has had enough of the Russia-Ukraine war. And so he says that the U.S. role will now be to sell weapons to NATO \u201cto do what they want with them.\u201d He added<\/a>: \u201cGood luck to all!\u201d<\/p>\nTrump being Trump, he is all over the map (the map upon which I suspect he could not identify Ukraine with one of those short fingers). Not long ago, he was sure that Ukraine couldn\u2019t win\u2014he also claimed that Ukraine had started the war\u2014and that the Ukrainians needed to get to a negotiated settlement as soon as possible. Now he says he thinks the Ukrainians may be able to take back all of the territory occupied (and annexed in some cases) by Russia, a proposition that is, unhappily, at least as implausible as any other dumb thing that has come out of Trump\u2019s mouth. He writes (on social media, of course) that he came to this conclusion \u201cafter getting to know and fully understand the Ukraine\/Russia Military and Economic situation.\u201d (As always, the illiterate capitalization is in the original.) <\/p>\n
Donald Trump has served a full term as president of these United States and then spent most of Joe Biden\u2019s term getting ready to run for another term of his own, which he is now well into\u2014and he\u2019s just now \u201cgetting to know and fully understand the Ukraine\/Russia\u201d situation? <\/p>\n
Who knew a sprawling military, political, and cultural conflict … wrapped up in, oh, 1,000 years of history … could be so complicated?
