And as is often the case with Trump, the hype is already outpacing the reality.<\/p>\nThe administration\u2019s press release called it the beginning of a \u201cStrong, Durable, and Everlasting Peace.\u201d That\u2019s not true. The deal is designed to achieve four limited objectives:<\/p>\n
\n- A ceasefire\n
- The pullback\u2014but not full withdrawal\u2014of most Israeli forces\n
- An exchange of roughly 45 Israeli hostages and bodies for nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners\n
- Massive deliveries of food and water to displaced civilians\n<\/ul>\n
With the guns silent and Gaza\u2019s long march home underway, aid trucks have begun crossing from Egypt into Gaza through a reopened border. Israeli troops have eased back from population centers.<\/p>\n
Several critical issues remain unresolved. Hamas has not accepted Israel\u2019s demand for complete disarmament and the destruction of its tunnel network. Israel, for its part, has not agreed to fully withdraw troops and heavy weapons. No consensus exists on deploying an international peacekeeping force, and there\u2019s no clear plan for Gaza\u2019s governance during reconstruction.
