For most Americans, gasoline is their single-largest energy expenditure, around <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/o\/8iBcA\/https:\/\/energywallet.epri.com\/en\/executive-summary.html\" target=\"_blank\">$2,930 per household<\/a> each year on average.<\/p>\n<p>While a more efficient dishwasher, light bulb, or faucet may have a higher sticker price up front\u2014especially as manufacturers adjust to new rules\u2014cars, appliances, solar panels, and electronics can more than pay for themselves with lower operating costs over their lifetimes. The two million federal workers who need paychecks will get them, and airlines should eventually get back to business as usual. These are no small things: aside from the individual human cost of the shutdown, the undermining of the federal government threatened to destroy it, and the administration\u2019s cuts to air traffic were hitting cargo planes, adding yet another blow to the weakening economy just before the busiest shopping season of the year.<\/p>\n<p>News of the terms of the deal to end the shutdown hit the country rather like a cue ball hitting a rack: lots of balls started to move in wildly different directions.<\/p>\n<p>The eight senators who voted with the Republicans appear to have lost any hope Trump would negotiate and, in that absence, decided they had to relieve the pain of the shutdown. As Dan Drezner noted in his Drezner\u2019s World, Trump\u2019s behavior during the shutdown made it clear he simply didn\u2019t care how badly Americans got hurt. \u201cHe did not just refuse to negotiate,\u201d Drezner noted. \u201cDuring the shutdown month he also completely bulldozed the East Wing, cut SNAP benefits, witnessed producers passing on the cost of tariffs to consumers, announced curbs on air travel, and participated in a Great Gatsby\u2013style party at Mar-a-Lago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Voters hated this, but Trump didn\u2019t appear to care. Indeed, his administration was working to ratchet up the pain &#8230;<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/heathercoxrichardson.substack.com\/p\/november-10-2025\" target=\"_blank\">(Heather Cox Richardson more&#8230;)<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.natesilver.net\/p\/trump-made-a-huge-blunder-on-the\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/kewus.net\/yesterday\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/donald-trump-s-b-style-color-904474-net-approval-rating-b-.png\" alt=\"Trump approval rating over time\" title=\"Trump approval rating over time\" width=\"384\" align=\"right\" hspace=\"3\" vspace=\"3\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Nate Silver: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.natesilver.net\/p\/trump-made-a-huge-blunder-on-the\" target=\"_blank\">Trump made a huge blunder on the shutdown. So why did Democrats cave anyway?<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>It&#8217;s not entirely Chuck Schumer&#8217;s fault, but the party needs new leadership.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve never really been on the same page as Congressional Democrats when it comes to shutting down the government. In the spring, I thought they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.natesilver.net\/p\/democrats-should-have-shut-it-down\" target=\"_blank\">should pick a fight over Elon Musk and DOGE-related cuts<\/a>, but they didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>Then in September, I <a href=\"https:\/\/www.natesilver.net\/p\/what-is-schumers-shutdown-endgame\" target=\"_blank\">thought all their options were pretty bad<\/a>. But that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/09\/22\/opinion\/democrats-shutdown-tariffs.html\" target=\"_blank\">tariffs<\/a>, not health care, would at least highlight President Trump\u2019s unpopular handling of the economy and provide more of a pain point for Republicans \u2014 without offering a deal that could actually help the GOP in next year\u2019s elections by extending popular health care subsidies.<\/p>\n<p>Mind you, I didn\u2019t expect Democrats to actually extract concessions from the GOP on tariffs. Rather, if Democrats held firm, Republicans would eventually have to pass a budget on their own by eliminating the filibuster \u2014 something that Democrats would rather be without anyway should they win a trifecta back in 2028.<\/p>\n<p>And then once the shutdown began on Oct. 1, I <a href=\"https:\/\/www.natesilver.net\/p\/the-3-contradictions-driving-the\" target=\"_blank\">disagreed with the conventional wisdom<\/a> that Democrats were \u201cwinning\u201d it. True, polls found that a slight plurality of voters blamed Republicans rather than Democrats. But those same polls showed that voters didn\u2019t understand why there was a shutdown in the first place, and that Democrats\u2019 message on health care wasn\u2019t breaking through.
