Musk appeared to be in charge of the first Cabinet meeting of the Trump administration today. As Kevin Liptak and Jeff Zeleny of CNN reported: “If anyone was still in doubt where the power lies in President Donald Trump’s new administration, Wednesday’s first Cabinet meeting made clear it wasn’t in the actual Cabinet.” Katherine Doyle of NBC News described “Senate-confirmed department heads spending an hour as audience members.”
…
Trump appeared to be aware of the popular anger at Musk’s power over the government and today dared the Cabinet members to suggest they weren’t happy with the arrangements. “ALL CABINET MEMBERS ARE EXTREMELY HAPPY WITH ELON,” Trump wrote on his social media channel this morning. “The Media will see that at the Cabinet Meeting this morning!!!” - Indifference or Hostility? Trump’s View of European Allies Raises Alarm
Debate is building over just how deep the Trump administration’s antagonism runs, and whether the real goal is to destroy the European Union. - Musk’s lies, lies, and more lies
He’s lying about what we did in the Clinton administration, lying when he says public servants are our enemies, and lying that beneficiaries of public programs are parasites.Democrats should make Elon Musk the face of the GOP budget
He’s unpopular and House Republicans are starting to get nervous.
…
One bright spot is that Democrats in the House — who have struggled to figure out how to respond to a second Trump term — remained totally united in voting against the budget framework. Markets Do Not LiePresident in Name Only (PINO) Donald Trump and acting president Elon Musk might be able to bamboozle some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you cannot bamboozle all of the people all of the time (to paraphrase Lincoln). And, hard as they may try, not even Fox News or the rest of the captive MAGA media can hide inflation, layoffs, and consistently bad economic news. That is a problem for a president who misled the voters by campaigning on how easily he would “bring down” prices.
“Trump campaigned relentlessly on the cost of living and made a big (and unrealistic) promise to bring down food prices on day one of his term,” The Guardian’s columnist Arwa Mahdawi reminded us. “Now, it’s clear he has no realistic plan to lower the cost of groceries; eventually, even his most devoted followers are going to figure out that you can’t eat the culture wars.”

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is already implementing his dangerous anti-vax views at HHS.
…
Kennedy paused a multimillion-dollar project to create a new Covid-19 vaccine in pill form on Tuesday, and the Food and Drug Administration canceled an advisory committee meeting on updating next season’s flu vaccine, an advisory committee said Wednesday.
…
These moves send a disturbing message that Kennedy’s anti-vaccine views are starting to influence health policy. On Wednesday, the secretary already had an alarming, nonchalant response to the first American measles death in a decade. Now it seems American public health efforts could experience a serious setback as long as President Trump and Kennedy are in government. - DOGE Said It Cut $232 Million From Social Security Budget. It Was Only About Half a Million.
The cut, an anti-trans attack, was the latest example of confusion sown by bold claims that wither under scrutiny.
…
In fact, the government cut only $560,000, a paltry savings generated by yet another Trump administration anti-trans attack: the elimination of a project to develop an “X” gender marker for the agency’s internal databases. The Social Security Administration Wednesday confirmed the discrepancy between the DOGE claims and the actual total, which was first uncovered by The Intercept. - Debunking the Myth that Conservatives Want “Small Government”

The people showing up, demanding answers, are real constituents, many of them lifelong Republicans, who are frustrated and scared. …
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) — yes, amazingly, their doors are still open — estimates that as many as 19,000 have died from the flu this season, with 86 of that number being children. There have been at least 900,000 hospitalizations from the flu. Both flu figures have been worse than COVID over this winter.
…
A reporter asked the new Health and Human Services Secretary, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., about the outbreak of measles in western Texas entirely among unvaccinated children and adults. Kennedy proceeded to tell a string of lies about the number of cases, explaining away hospitalizations for reasons of quarantine, and telling an outright lie about the number who have been hospitalized. The question could have been about the recent outbreak in severe flu cases, and similar lies would have fallen out of Kennedy’s mouth. He lied to the Senate when he was up for confirmation, telling them that he would abide by CDC vaccination guidelines. Two days after he took office, Kennedy ordered that the guidelines be “investigated.”Today, Kennedy ordered the cancellation of an FDA meeting of a vaccine advisory panel, without explanation. The panel meets every January or February to recommend the flu strains that will be covered by next year’s shot. Without the panel’s recommendation, drug manufacturers can’t start making the flu vaccine.
- “Following executive orders, ‘The President’s Own’ Marine Band scraps concert”
Because of Donald Trump’s war on diversity, equity and inclusion. (DEI)
I get that it is “The President’s own” United States Marine Band, and he can dictate programming. But to cancel an already planned concert and musical retreat that high school kids from diverse backgrounds already auditioned for and won their respective positions for the occasion of rehearsing and performing alongside the Marines, is just cruel. It’s yet another disgrace in a month full of them, and with kids involved again—what a slap in the face to these high school kids who’ve been working towards this day for months if not years. This is music, for goodness sake. The Marine Band mentoring high school kids for a program already on the books, that high school minority kids were selected under the guidance of the Marines (likely under the last administration of Biden/Harris) is a good thing for everyone. Beyond the music, there is also the opportunity for the Marine musicians to encourage young people towards a career in the military as an enlistee, and to bring their ability to play music with them.
Racism like this in full pursuit has many repercussions obviously. In music, it may discourage minority kids who once shown interest in participating in music programs at school, to turn away from band or orchestra altogether—from the various musical genres that caring teachers have been working for a lifetime to fully integrate. Minority kids and their parents looking at their white leaders might say that this music is just not for them, even though historically the violin itself was widely played by black musicians generations ago. It took consistent institutional racism to turn African Americans away from the violin and string playing, or to prevent them from playing it altogether professionally, and a lot of people are to blame for that from many corners. But now the government is the lead player in discouraging or refusing minority kids to be involved in a music program with our own Marines. Or technically speaking, “The President’s Own Marines”. But of course, the President represents American citizens. Does he not?
