Rebekah Spicuglia: I Lost My Son to MS-13. I Still Oppose Trump’s Deportations.
…
Why I oppose Trump’s deportations.
One might think as a mother of a son killed by gang violence, I’d support Trump’s deportations of supposed “violent criminals.” But I know from personal experience that these actions do not keep us safe. Despite my personal tragedy — in fact, because of it — I do not believe the U.S. should wage war on immigrants, or deport people to prison in El Salvador without due process. It is a betrayal of our principles, our wellbeing, and common sense.
…- First off, these deportations hurt — not help — communities that have been victimized by gang violence.
- El Salvador’s stability is new, and frankly, untested.
- We’ve made this mistake before. 1990s mass deportations actually led to the strengthening of MS-13 into a notorious transnational criminal organization, a cycle we are now repeating.
- The pinnacle of MS-13 power has long been in El Salvador’s prison system. Sending MS-13 members there (assuming deportees even are members) effectively promotes them.
- Trump’s narrative about MS-13 victims – and all “victims of migrant crime” – is skewed. But it is compelling, and must be challenged in an equally compelling way.
- Trump isn’t deporting convicted killers
- Our justice system should be centering victims more — not less.
- Mass deportation is family separation by another name.

Conversation: Nuclear power is booming. Where will we put the waste?
…
In March 2025, the U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments related to the effort to find a temporary storage location for the nation’s nuclear waste; a ruling is expected by late June. No matter the outcome, the decades-long struggle to find a permanent place to dispose of nuclear waste will probably continue for many years to come.
