… trying to ‘unbury the lede’
Lucian K. Truscott IV:
It took a woman of immense courage to bring Trump to justice. E. Jean Carroll is that woman.
It is truly worth celebrating, what happened today when Donald Trump was finally forced by a court of law to transfer $5,625,005.48 to E. Jean Carroll’s bank account. We cannot forget the living hell she went through. E. Jean was sexually assaulted in a Bergdorf’s dressing room by Donald Trump. She was penetrated in such a way that it did not amount to rape under New York law but was declared a rape as “the word is commonly understood” by Judge Lewis A. Kaplan, who presided over her defamation suit against Trump.
I don’t know of any way to calculate how much courage it took for E. Jean to sue the President of the United States. She filed suit in 2019, claiming that Trump had defamed her in an interview after her article in New York Magazine, “Hideous Men,” was published in June of that year. Trump denied knowing her, he called her a liar, and of course, as proof that it never happened, Trump said “she’s not my type.”
That’s not just a regular lawsuit to file. …

Jennifer Rubin: ‘Weaponized’ lies
The murder of yet another nonviolent, decent, hardworking American at the hands of ICE thugs operating under the banner of federal immigration law should be grounds for national outrage and termination of all Trump officials involved in the perpetuation of a rogue operation. This is especially the case when agents of that operation kill with impunity and then resort to easily debunked lies to cover their tracks.

Trump Administration Signs Executive Order to Dismantle Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante National MonumentsHeather Cox Richardson: Letters from an American – July 14, 2026
In August 1870 a U.S. exploring expedition headed out from Montana toward the Yellowstone River into land the U.S. government had recognized as belonging to different Indigenous tribes.
…On March 1, 1872, President U.S. Grant, a Republican, signed the bill making Yellowstone a national park.
…Presidents of both parties continued to protect American lands, but in the late nineteenth century it was New York Republican politician Theodore Roosevelt who most dramatically expanded the effort to keep western lands from the hands of those who wanted only their timber and minerals.
…… Since the 1980s, Republicans have pushed to reopen public lands to resource development, maintaining even today that Democrats have hampered oil production although under President Joe Biden it reached an all-time high.
President Donald Trump pushed to return public lands to private hands during his first term. …
…But Project 2025, the blueprint for the second Trump presidency, called for significant increases in drilling for oil and gas and removing land from federal protection and opening it to private development. As Roberts urged, Project 2025 promised to seek a Supreme Court ruling that would permit it to reduce the size of national monuments, saying a second Trump administration “must seek repeal of the Antiquities Act of 1906.”
Shortly after retaking office, Trump declared a “national energy emergency,” and yesterday he signed two proclamations. …

The Strange Worlds Among Us—of Turing, Trans People, and the Road to LaniakeaIn his paper, “Computing Machinery and Intelligence,” Alan Turing considers a simple question: “Can machines think?”
However, Turing begins his actual answer not with machines, but with something called “The Imitation Game.” It is basically a texting game in which two players, a man and a woman, chat with a third “interrogator” of unspecified gender.
The object of the game is for the interrogator to determine, through texts alone, which player is a man and which player is a woman. The man seeks to deceive, while the woman is trying to help the interrogator guess correctly, but of course the interrogator is not told which is which.
And so, the first form of what would later be known as the “Turing Test” was not about whether a machine can pass as a human, but if a male speaker can pass as a female.
It is only a few paragraphs later that Turing shifts his focus back to machines.

Teri Carter: McConnell’s Absence
…
In the last couple of years, McConnell has had public episodes, on camera, in which he freezes and cannot move or speak. The photo and written statement that were released a couple of days ago are not sufficient, if for no other reason, because of these episodes. If he can speak, why is there no video/audio?
And why has he made no audio or video statement about the sudden death of his longtime colleague, Senator Lindsey Graham?
