Sept. 12, 1966 | White Mobs Attack Black Students Integrating Mississippi Schools
White mobs attacked Negro students, newsmen, and photographers outside two newly integrated public schools in Grenada, Miss., as classes dismissed today.
A 12-year-old Negro boy fled through a block of hostile whites, suffering facial bleeding and torn clothes before escaping. Mob members threw another young student to the pavement, kicking and beating him as he tried to leave the property.
“That’ll teach you,” yelled one white man. “Don’t come back tomorrow.”
The boy answered: “I don’t want to come here anyway. My mother sent me.”
“You tell her if you come back here tomorrow, she’ll be dead,” the man replied.
A police officer watched the assault without intervening.
Mob members destroyed the camera equipment of Memphis Press-Scimitar photographers Jack Cantrell (pictured being attacked) and Jim Reid.
UPI reporter Robert Gordon was walking nearby when an attacker shouted, “There’s a reporter — get him!”

Data Centers, Coal, and Who Really PaysTennessee ratepayers were told not to worry.
Data centers would pay their own way.
Tennessee passed a law. Gov. Bill Lee signed onto a national “Ratepayer Protection Pledge.” TVA signed the pledge too.
Then TVA decided it may need to spend hundreds of millions of dollars keeping an aging coal plant alive while operating a brand-new gas plant beside it.
And now TVA is being sued.

Heather Cox Richardson:
Letters from an American – September 12, 2026On Thursday, in The New Republic, conservative judge J. Michael Luttig published a dire warning to the Republican Party…and to all Americans. In the piece, Luttig outlined how Republicans could refuse to seat elected Democrats in January after a Democratic victory in the 2026 midterm elections of November. “The coming crisis,” the piece says, would be “The Final Battle for America’s Democracy.”
Luttig spelled out that Trump is fighting a war against America’s democracy. While the refusal of Vice President Mike Pence to assist his power grab made it fail in January 2021, Luttig notes, today Trump and his Republican congressional allies are more determined than ever to take over the country.
