Oil seems entrenched above $100
As the chart shows, ceasefires haven’t worked. There is a real risk that oil prices eventually get entrenched above $100. Oil is now 60% higher than in early August. The concern is that it stays there, and that this feeds through into economies around the world, hitting GDP growth and inflation.

While Trump suggests he will defend the United States from atop his triumphal arch, our European allies are much more concerned with Russia’s drone strike last Sunday on a passenger train traveling from Kyiv, Ukraine, to Warsaw, Poland. The train was just over a mile—two kilometers—from the Polish border when the drone hit at a border crossing. The drone hit just after a convoy carrying former leaders and high-level diplomats, including former U.K. prime minister Boris Johnson, had passed through.

… Trump “has largely looked at all of this and said, that’s a European problem. He doesn’t feel a threat to the United States from Russia, and he doesn’t see a need for the U.S. to increase its pushback on Russia at all.” …
Trump’s stand is interesting in light of news that Russia has been helping Iran in its fight against the United States, sending upgraded munitions as well as satellite imagery and targeting data to hit U.S. forces in the Middle East.

The history of human subjects research in the United States is checkered with horrifying examples of exploitation that demonstrate the need for overarching protections for research participants. From the US Public Health Service Syphilis Study at Tuskegee, in which poor African American men in rural Alabama were denied treatment for their syphilis so that federal researchers could study its natural progression, to Willowbrook, where institutionalized mentally disabled children were deliberately infected with hepatitis in order to develop treatments for the disease, researchers have time and again trampled upon the legal and ethical rights of vulnerable populations in the name of science. To address these egregious violations, scientists, ethicists, academics, and politicians in the 1970s and 1980s developed a body of regulations to oversee biomedical and behavioral research involving human subjects in the US, known today as the Common Rule.
