How Iran Battered U.S. Bases and Caused Billions in Damage
Satellite imagery shows hundreds of damaged buildings at more than two dozen installations, in the fullest accounting of the destruction yet
Three American servicemembers were killed in a July 17 Iranian strike on Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in the Jordanian desert. Satellite imagery shows the nighttime attack damaged at least 19 buildings where troops sleep.
It was one of the deadliest nights of the war for U.S. forces. But it wasn’t the only attack targeting American troops where they live and sleep. That same week, Iran hit multiple housing units at other U.S. military installations across the region.
The July strikes marked an alarming shift in Iran’s tactics and revealed an improvement in the regime’s ability to sequence attacks and hit targets with precision. Iran was taking more direct aim at the buildings that house American troops, according to a Wall Street Journal analysis of satellite data, Iranian military statements and interviews with U.S. officials.

Europe’s Fossil-Fuel Problem Has an Electric Solution…
“Electricity is the solution for our green aspirations as well as for our security equation,” Kristian Ruby, secretary general of Eurelectric, which represents more than 3,500 utilities in 32 countries, said on the Zero podcast.Oil and gas make up for more than 60% of energy consumed by industry, buildings and transport, while fossil fuels make up less than a third of Europe’s electricity mix.
“Europe has finally gotten the memo that electricity is our way of insulating our economies against these roller coaster prices of fossil fuels and against the wars in geographies that we don’t control,” Ruby said.
And it’s not just a solution for Europe. If the world pursues electrification seriously, it can cut its total energy use in half while producing all the same services that the current system provides. …

A Florida sheriff’s office arrested a mother who had left her children home alone for days to go on a work trip, reigniting the debate over when parents act irresponsibly.Irene Miller, a professional photographer based just outside Disney World in Florida, went to Las Vegas for work this month, leaving her four children at home. The oldest is 14, the youngest 9.
She was divorcing their father, who did not live with them at their home in Kissimmee, Fla., so she hired a babysitter to get the children ready for school in the mornings and to check on them after school. Otherwise, they were by themselves for several days.

Letters from an American – October 31, 2026On his “Swing Around the Circle” in summer 1866 to drum up support for his party before that year’s midterms, President Andrew Johnson denounced Congress as an illegal body, called certain Republican members of Congress traitors who should be hanged, and compared himself both to his martyred predecessor Abraham Lincoln and to Jesus Christ.
In those days, the Democrats were the party of slavery and secession, while the young Republican Party stood firm on the Declaration of Independence. …
…It was all too much for voters. The white supremacist violence across the South horrified them, the restoration of power to southern whites infuriated them, the reduction of Black soldiers to quasi-slaves enraged them, and Johnson’s attacks on Congress alarmed them. Johnson seemed determined to hand the country over to its former enemies to re-create the antebellum world that northerners had just poured more than 350,000 lives and $5 billion into destroying, no matter what voters wanted.
Johnson’s extremism and his supporters’ violence created a backlash. Northerners were not willing to hand the country back to the Democrats who were rioting in the South and to a president who compared himself to Jesus. Rather than turning against the Republicans in the 1866 elections, voters repudiated Johnson. They gave Republicans a two-thirds majority of Congress, enabling them to override any policy Johnson proposed.
And, in 1868, the states ratified the Fourteenth Amendment to the Constitution, launching a new era in the history of the United States.
